Brimstone Cladding

Vastern Timber Company Limited Stand: 243
Brimstone is thermally modified British hardwood cladding, produced by Vastern Timber at the sawmill in Royal Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire.

Ash, poplar and sycamore grow well in British woodlands, yet none of these species lasts long outdoors in its natural state. Brimstone changes this. The timber is heated to 210°C using heat and steam, with no chemicals added. The process alters the structure of the wood and reduces the moisture the boards absorb. The result is a cladding rated Durability Class 1, the highest class for natural durability, with less movement than untreated timber.

Thermal modification turns each species a rich brown through its full thickness. Left uncoated, Brimstone mellows to a silver grey over time. A coating slows this change for anyone who prefers to keep the brown tone for longer.

Brimstone ash, poplar and sycamore each bring a different grain and character, so the choice of species depends on the look the building needs.

Vastern has milled British timber since 1904 and is one of the UK's largest hardwood sawmills. Brimstone was the original thermally modified British timber.
