British Larch

Vastern Timber Company Limited Stand: 243
Larch is one of the toughest softwoods grown in Britain. Dense and hard-wearing, the timber has a long history in cladding, fencing and boat building. Vastern Timber supplies British larch cladding, milled at the sawmill in Royal Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire.

For many years Siberian larch set the benchmark for larch cladding in the UK. Since imports from Russia ended in 2022, British larch has offered a home-grown alternative with the same robust nature.

Larch heartwood is used untreated as cladding. Fresh boards range from pale honey to orange brown, with visible knots and strong grain. Left uncoated, larch weathers to a silver grey over time.

British larch performs best with good detailing. A ventilated batten behind the boards, a fixing into every batten and stainless steel fixings keep the cladding sound and free from staining for years to come.

British larch suits barns, garden rooms, extensions and rural homes where a natural, rustic finish fits the setting. Larch costs less than cedar and weighs more, so the choice often comes down to budget and the look of the building.

Vastern has milled British timber since 1904 and is one of the UK's largest hardwood sawmills.
