British Western Red Cedar

Vastern Timber Company Limited Stand: 243
Western red cedar has been a favourite cladding timber for decades, valued for natural durability, low weight and warm colour. Most cedar sold in the UK comes from North America. Vastern Timber supplies western red cedar grown in Britain, milled at the sawmill in Royal Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire.

Cedar needs no chemical preservative for use as cladding. The timber contains natural extractives, compounds which help the wood resist decay. Low density makes the boards light to handle and fix, and cedar moves less than many species as moisture levels change through the seasons.

Freshly installed, the colour ranges from pale pink to deep reddish brown. Left uncoated, cedar weathers to a silver grey over time. British-grown cedar carries more knots than imported clean grades, giving the cladding a natural, varied character.

The same extractives which protect the timber react with iron, so stainless steel fixings are essential to avoid black staining around nails and screws.

Recent work includes Old Orchard in Oxfordshire, an EnerPHit retrofit by Gresford Architects. Cedar felled on the site clads part of the house, with British-grown cedar from Vastern matched to complete the remaining areas.

Vastern has milled British timber since 1904 and is one of the UK's largest hardwood sawmills.
