Larch cladding and a muted zinc roof create a simple, refined exterior, chosen for their natural character and suitability for the coastal climate. At the heart of the design, a taller, mono-pitched central volume houses the main living spaces, drawing the eye towards the horizon. Lower wings accommodate the bedrooms and service areas, providing a subtle distinction between public and private spaces while reinforcing the building’s horizontal emphasis.
The Douglas fir structural frame is expressed internally, bringing warmth, rhythm and craftsmanship to the interiors. Its natural grain complements the understated material palette, while allowing generous open spaces and wide spans within the main living area. Large areas of glazing connect the interior with the landscape and open onto a full-width, raised veranda along the western elevation. This sheltered outdoor space extends the living area, offering a place to relax, dine and enjoy the changing light across the countryside and out to sea.
Covered entrances at both the front and rear provide welcome shelter from the coastal weather, creating practical and inviting points of arrival. Inside, a calm, understated palette allows the timber frame and expansive views to take centre stage, while carefully positioned bedroom windows balance privacy with a connection to the outdoors.
Environmental performance is integral to the design. Solar PV panels are discreetly incorporated into the mono-pitched roof, with a Tesla battery storing surplus energy. An air-source heat pump provides heating and hot water, while passive ventilation and solar shading help maintain comfortable internal temperatures during warmer weather. Together, these measures create a highly efficient home that is carbon positive over an annual cycle.
The result is a home that combines contemporary architecture with a sensitive response to its setting. Low-lying, carefully detailed and deeply connected to its landscape, it balances shelter, openness and sustainability to create a calm, comfortable home with a strong sense of place.
