Octopus Energy powers past 10 million customers globally
In less than a decade, Octopus has risen from a tech
challenger to the largest energy supplier in the UK, whilst branching out into
new markets and industries. It operates a £7 billion renewables portfolio – one
of the largest in Europe – as well as thriving EV leasing, heat pump and solar
businesses.
Its retail presence now spans eight countries across Europe,
Asia and North America – the UK, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Japan, the US
and New Zealand – with several international markets on track to hit one
million customers by 2027.
TIME Magazine has named Octopus Energy one of
the world's ‘100 Most Influential Companies’.
Greg Jackson, Founder of Octopus Energy, said: “It’s
very rare for a startup to overtake incumbents in regulated markets, and I’m
proud that we did that in the UK and are now accelerating across so many
countries. I’m even more proud that we have 4.8/5 Trustpilot across almost
every market we operate – proving our brand has universal appeal – and our
relentless focus on customers transcends national regulatory and cultural
differences.
“I’m excited that we continue to innovate at this scale, and that we are
continually unlocking new value on windy days, sunny days, high demand days and
using solar, battery, heat pump and electric cars to keep driving down costs.”
UK: rise to the top
Octopus is the first energy supplier to overtake the
incumbents and hit the UK’s number one spot since the market was opened for
competition in the 1990s, now serving 7.8 million customers. It is the most
awarded energy supplier in the UK, winning top industry accolades for customer
service, value, and sustainability while maintaining a Trustpilot rating of
4.8. Recognised by consumer body Which? for 8 consecutive
years, Octopus also ranks on The Sunday Times’ ‘Best Places to
Work’ list.
Octopus’s Kraken technology platform has allowed over a dozen acquisitions to
be managed seamlessly – rapidly delivering Octopus’s service and experience to
millions more customers.
Germany: the second biggest market
Germany is Octopus’ second-biggest market, now powering over
1 million German homes – a landmark achievement that makes it the first country
outside the UK where Octopus has achieved this feat. Following the successful
launch of its heat pump installation business and over £200 million injected
into the German ‘Energiewende’, it's now shaking up the automotive industry. In
September, Octopus Electric Vehicles was launched in Germany to power the
switch to electric driving.
France: the trusted alternative
The newcomer has quickly become France’s fifth-largest
energy supplier and the largest independent alternative provider. Octopus is
trusted by nearly 600,000 French domestic and business customers, including the
cities of Paris, Marseille and Lyon. It also holds the highest Trustpilot score
among energy suppliers in the country (4.8), reflecting its commitment to
service excellence and green energy solutions.
Italy: award-winning growth
Octopus has seen similar growth in Italy, tripling its
customer base in just one year. The company now boasts almost 500,000 customers
across the country. It won ‘Best Provider’ twice from consumer
association Altroconsumo, secured an outstanding TrustPilot score
of 4.9 and was recognised as the energy supplier with the best customer service
by major daily newspaper Corriere della Sera for 2024 and
2025.
Spain: unlocking the power of the sun
In Spain Octopus supplies over 400,000 customers and is
recognised as the 'Fastest-growing Independent Energy Supplier' by the National
Commission for Markets and Competition and ‘Best Energy Supplier according to
Spanish Consumers’ by IMA Marketing. Its services business has seen dazzling
growth since its launch in 2023, installing more than 8,000 solar panels, EV
chargers and heat-pumps per year. On top of this, the company has announced new
investments that will add up to 600 MW of renewable capacity – enough to power
2.3 million homes.
Japan: driving growth through local partnerships and
technology
Japan has rapidly become one of Octopus Energy’s
fastest-growing markets, now powering nearly half a million customers with
green electricity nationwide through a joint venture with Tokyo Gas. Between
2022 and 2024, the company saw more than 10x growth, outpacing every other
company in Japan's top 40 energy suppliers, according to METI. This success is
grounded in a culture of trust, transparency and autonomy – earning the company
a place as one of the best places to work by the Great Place To Work® Institute
Japan.
Octopus has not only brought its award-winning service to
customers around the world, it has also pioneered tech-led innovations that are
driving green energy and bringing bills down for people. Its flagship offerings
include:
- Electroverse: Europe’s
largest EV public charging network with 1.1 million chargers across 40
countries
- The
Fan Club: a smart tariff that gives people discounted electricity
when their local wind turbine is spinning, now available in the UK,
Germany, France and Texas
- Zero
Bills: an initiative guaranteeing homes no energy bills for 5-10
years, with 5,000 homes already accredited across the UK, Germany and New
Zealand and a target of 100,000 by 2030
